MLA Walkthrough

Why cite?

Citing is a way to give credit to the source of quotes or ideas. When you take any words or concepts from any other source, you must indicate the source!

Citing has two purposes: continuity and ethics.

Continuity has to do with being able to trace ideas

  • Follow the evolution of ideas
  • Tells where to go for more information if the reader is really interested

Ethics has to do with fairness. Not citing is both lying and stealing.

  • Lying about what the author really wrote
  • Stealing other people’s ideas
