Description: The final paper is an exercise that will test the students’ ability to comprehend and compile information into a ‘mini-review’ format. The mini-review should include an abstract, introduction, discussion, and separate conclusion section. The mini-review should also include a reference (bibliography) section.

 

Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to challenge and test the students’ aptitude in scientific writing. This assignment will also examine each individual student’s ability to comprehend a critical mass of scientific literature while also sharpening their skills as presenters. These are essential skills necessary for any scientific student preparing to enter postgraduate education or work.

 

Overall: The ‘mini-review’ should be 8-12 pages in length (double spaced); this does not include figure legends, figures, or references. This assignment will be graded on content, clarity and the student’s ability to present the information in a logical manner, as well as following formatting guidelines.

 

Mandatory Sections: Each ‘mini-review’ will be based a specific topic in science (i.e. Regulation of invasive and non-invasive breast cancer growth) and will include the sections listed below:

 

Abstract: Will be a concise overview of the mini-review that will describe the major topic and the specific issues addressed in the review. The abstract should be between 150-250 words in length.

 

Introduction: Will allow all readers at any level in the class to understand the field being discussed as well as the specific points that are reviewed. The introduction should be complete enough that any reader will be able to ask tangible questions regarding the subject. The introduction should not be longer than 2 pages.

 

Discussion: This section should be subdivided into smaller sections that discuss in detail the specific issues being addressed. This section should also contain at least 3 figures. Two figures must be original figures designed by you the author, while the other figure can be copied and pasted from another source. Proper credit must be given to each figure that is copied. Figures do not count in the total page count.

 

Figures: should be inserted at the end of the review and not embedded in the text. Each figure needs to be accompanied by a corresponding figure legend. The figure legend should completely describe the information presented in the figure. Please see example of how to incorporate figures into paper.

 

Conclusion: This portion of the review should neatly wrap-up the major points put forth in the discussion. Furthermore, this is your opportunity to inject personal position of the subject. However, any personal position taken should have been clearly supported in either the discussion or conclusion with cited works.

 

 

References: Each mini-review must cite at least 15 references in the proper format. The proper format is shown below.
